People say the desert is empty when they mean they cannot read it yet. Highways skip the canals, the fields, the towns, the ranges, and the old irrigation alignments that still cut the Phoenix basin. Empty is a speed, not a survey.
I have guided small groups in this country. I have also driven it alone with a camera. Both are ordinary jobs. Neither one requires an old man by a fire or a vibration coming up through the boots. Those scenes were not on my record. They do not belong on this site.
What does belong: the Sonoran plant mix, the way sound carries on a still morning, military and civil aircraft in the same sky people watch for other lights, and the fact that Indigenous communities live here now. Folklore about empty land has a bad habit of erasing that.
